Vehicles with 'Keyless' fobs. |
||
|
More and more cars now have keyless fobs as a standard feature, but they have also been associated with a noticeable increase in the theft of cars using this technology. The use of keyless fobs enables the car’s owner to approach his/her car and the vehicle then senses the keyless fob’s emission and unlocks the car. Similarly, when the owner leaves the vehicle, it automatically locks behind them. Criminals use hacking devices that can remotely exploit the vulnerabilities of modern cars. They work in pairs by wandering onto a driveway at night. One of them will get as close to the house as possible, holding a box with an aerial. This device picks up the faint, but distinct, signal emitted by the keyless fob inside the house. It then repeats this signal more strongly to the second thief, who is holding a related device next to the car. The car then simply unlocks itself. Within minutes, sometimes seconds, the thieves drive off in this vehicle. Protection from this crime can be achieved by buying Signal Blockers from Wycombe District Neighbourhood Watch Association that cost just £3.50 or £4.00 depending on the size. Note: do protect the spare keyless fob as well as the one in use. For supplies of these Signal Blockers, contact WDNHWA via: office@wdnhwatch.plus.com
